International adoptions 05听Mar 2004
Every news item about orphanages in Romania or China prompts a surge of interest from British parents looking to adopt children from abroad.

But in practice only around 300 children a year come to this country as a result of international adoptions. France, Italy and Spain take ten times as many.

Helen Rose-Walsh, who has adopted one Guatemalan child and is in the process of adopting a second, talks about her experience.

Sheila is joined by Naomi Angel, solicitor and adoptive parent and Nigel Cantwell from UNICEF to discuss what more can be done to ease the path for prospective adoptive parents in Britain, whilst protecting the rights of the children.
