How central are women to Vodou?
Vodou is a traditional听 religion that spread from West Africa across the world with the slave trade. The word Vodou appears to derive from the Fon word for 'spirit', describing the concept of a world alive with spirit and energy, and anthropologists estimate the religion to be 6 to 10,000 years old.
A new production at the West Yorkshire Playhouse explores the Vodou tradition. Jenni talks to the show's producer, Jan Ryan, and to one of Haiti's vodou priestess, also known as Mambos. She also talks to photographer Leah Gordon whose work has been inspired by Haiti, and explores women's role in vodou culture and practice.
Vodou Nation is on at the West Yorkshire Playhouse until 26 June 2004
Leah Gordon's photographs and decorated Haitian flags can be seen at the October Gallery, London from the 23rd June
