Dame Rosemary Murray 13听October听2004
the first woman Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge

When Professor Alison Richard took up her post as Vice Chancellor of Cambridge last year, she was only the second woman to do so.

But one issue she didn't have to worry about was what to wear on ceremonial occasions. Her predecessor Dame Rosemary Murray, the first woman Vice Chancellor of the university, had already devised a cassock fit for the female form and the pattern was duly passed on.

Dame Rosemary was also the founding president of the all-female Cambridge college, New Hall.

She died aged 91 she died in Oxford last week.

In 2001 she shared her memories of her career with Woman's Hour, leafing through her photo album with reporter Henrietta Ottley.
