Bristol Women's Walk 07 December 2004
discovering听Bristol's female past

"Go Home and Do The Washing!" was a book published a few years ago which uncovered three centuries of Bristol's women pioneers - the title an insult hurled at a local suffragette.

Inspired by the discovery of a Bristol trade directory from 1793, Lorna Brierly and Helen Reid researched and wrote the book.

The listings included surprising number of women, which included two poulterers, eight butchers, two fishmongers, a plumber, an organ builder, three brokers, a tobacconist and two tinplate workers.

Fiona Lamdin joined them for a tour of the city's female past.
