What kind of pre-school education should children receive?

The school inspection service, Ofsted, has criticised a nursery school in Stockton-on-Tees for spending too long teaching pupils to count and write their names and not allowing them enough time to develop their imagination.

The head teacher rejects these claims and believes that inspectors are imposing less rigorous standards on nursery schools.

So what kind of 'education' should the increasing number of children attending pre-school receive? Jenni talks to Professor Iram Siraj-Blatchford, from the Institute of Education, who specialises in Early Childhood Education.
