Black boys and education 8听March听2005

would separate classes improve their school performance?

Is the state school system failing black boys? Latest figures show Black Caribbean teenagers are trailing their white counterparts in GCSE results, and the debate is raging about how best to improve their educational chances.

Woman's Hour hears from three mothers who feel their sons are likely to fare so badly in British education that they are sending their boys to school in West Africa.

So should British schools be taking more drastic steps to help black boys, possibly teaching them separately as Trevor Phillips has suggested? Or is it unrealistic to expect schools to tackle the problem alone?
