27th January is National Holocaust Memorial Day. In this article Chief Rabbi Prof Jonathan Sacks reflects on the Holocaust.
The Jewish Community has its own memorial day for the Holocaust. Yom Ha-Shoah. Shoah is the Hebrew word for 'whirlwind' or 'destruction'. It is the term used to described the conflagration that swept up six million Jewish souls between 1938 and 1945. At the same time, it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943.
Jews around the world hold memorials and vigils, often lighting six candles in honour of the six million Holocaust victims. Many hold name-reading ceremonies, read poetry, prayers and sing in memory of those who perished.
In a feature for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Religion and Ethics the Chief Rabbi gives his personal reflections on The Holocaust. You can either hear individual sections or listen to his reflections in full.
