Many people in Scotland now had better living conditions and more money. They were able to buy goods which they hadn’t been able to afford before. Washing machines, dishwashers and electric vacuum cleaners did jobs which had previously been done by hand. Housework took a lot less time and effort and meant people (mostly women) could spend more time doing other things.
People began to change the way their homes were furnished - wood was out and plastics were in. People bought lava lamps, brightly coloured furniture, plastic vases and even plastic flowers! Wallpaper could be bright and patterned with flowers or swirls or bold black and white. Design was heavily influenced by space travel and 1960s’ art.
