How we make clothes - How many pieces?
One of the main challenges designers have is to reduce waste, as they will probably be working to a budget. The best way to reduce waste is to plan ahead.

Designers use something called a lay plan to help them by laying paper patterns onto material. Waste is reduced by positioning the patterns close together, fitting shapes tightly around each other. A bit like cutting biscuits out of dough.

Print out the two sheets below. Cut out the long sleeve T-shirt pattern pieces and see if you can fit them all into the box. When you have finished you will have created a lay plan of your own.
