New year, same weather

I had a fantastic time down south. Just one day of rain, the full moon was lovely and it was so warm. Then we came home. The ferry called twice on Tuesday, but hasn't docked since. Today the Isle of Arran tried but it doesn't have the power. Tomorrow Calmac will try again. I heard they were going send the Isle of Mull but rumour has it the Isle of Mull is running on just one engine. It wasn't on the Mull run today because of problems with some life rafts. Lord of the Isles also had problems with ropes and propellors so it wasn't easy for Calmac bosses. Meanwhile our favourite skipper Captain Billimore and The Clansman are having a cushy time down on the Clyde. The removal men discovered the library today, the plumber has watched nearly every video and the joiners, who weren't due to leave until today anyway, have drunk all the Budweiser.

Back at home some panes of glass jumped out of the greenhouse. I'm amazed the whole lot didn't go once the wind could get in. Olvin has patched it up with plywood and a lot of G-cramps. I wonder how long he'll manage without them in the barn. The greenhouse is a heavy galvanised frame and it took ages to scrape all the old putty off before we glazed it. I'm not good with putty, I did my first greenhouse with putty and said never again. So we got those nice people from Screwfix to send out tubes of sticky silicon stuff. The kind of sticky stuff that clogs the nozzle of the gunge gun as soon as you use it, and miraculously unclogs itself when you put it down and oozes a trail of stickiness just where you want to stand. It gets all over your hands and the middle of the panes of glass and your T-shirt and runs out just before you do the very top bit and the stepladder is wobbling and your knees are stuck to the top rung. And most annoying of all, it doesn't stick well to galvanised metal which is just typical! Still, I'm sure the fresh air was good for the garlic.

Welcome Back, NiconColl, Glad all went well with your Holiday, Sorry you are suffereing somewhat with the recent bad weather, but Hell that is par for the course on Coll. Your avid blog readers have missed you dearly and I am pleased to see you back in the driving seat as it were. Cheers!

Errrrrrrm.............what's a G-cramp? Is it easy to spot? Premature nozzle problems are just a feature of ageing. Regular use is the only solution.

Great to have you back Nic. Saddo that I am I was watching the webcam yesterday to see if the Isle of Mull came back in but the Oban webcam wasn't turning much yesterday and so all I could see was the restaurants on the other pier.

G-cramp is granny cramp. He meant G-clamp, but his fingers were still stiff frozen from working outside. Have pity, FC.

Hi Nic, I was Buzz 2, but Buzz got upset, so a name change was afoot. Good to see you're back safe on Coll. Glasgow's had an extremely interesting 3 weeks of gales, followed by calm, followed by gales, it's the weirdest weather I've experienced in my lifetime. Really short sharp gusts reduced me to having to drive at 25mph on the M77 no less! I can assure you that this is not a normal occurrence. There's a thought, maybe to stop speeding on this road the Council could employ a wind tunnel or two. As for DIY, I always go for Unibond's No More Nails. I'm determined some day to see if I can glue a chair to a wall and then sit on it! My house windows very nearly came in and I suspect we shall have to do some work on them over the summer, see earlier reference to No More Nails! The good news was that Hogmanay was cancelled because of it (the Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling outdoor events that is) so I did not have to spend 15hrs sitting in a Portacabin in Princes Square (hubby was meant to be gigging). I have to ask, do you supply the hotel with garlic? Do you grow organic, non-organic or a mixture? And before the bad weather season starts does Kevin do a serious stock up on booze, you know, just in case the ferry can't get it to you? Did anyone lose out on Christmas presents due to ferries not getting in? That's my queries for you for the moment. Hope you're settling back into hard work!

Nic, my post saying how glad I am you are back seems to be missing so I'll say it again. Glad you had a good holiday.

good to see your back safe, met big roddy and georrge on the clansman last week and upset all passengers in earshot by asking when the boat got to lochboisdale, arran folk panic at slightest thing.Having agood laugh reading the blogs ,incedentally my conservatory "moved" in early november winds and still waiting for an "engineer" to come and fix it -are there any stuck on coll??.Still hope to fly out for lunch when runway and rail link to hotel are finished and if the weather ever picks up,keep writing asit brings a bit of humour to my day to read of the goings on on coll- regards john p(linkspan)not the old crabbit one

Nic, you're probably busy catching up with being back but you are the woman in the know! Soooooo...IS the airstrip too short or not? Will I ever be able to get a flight out to Coll? Heinous suggestion I know as I LOVE Calmac, but just as a once off to try out the airstrip (if it's long enough). Oh, and batten down the hatches, seems the real bad weather is on its way.

Oh, a webcam on Coll pier pointing out to the ferry of course! Just a suggestion. Of course, it wouldn't last in this weather and a 'base station' for it would probably be hard to arrange, long cable required.

CALMAC - you've got to love them, but service notices just aren't up to date. Why does one have to resort to the Oban webcam to find out what's going in and out? Currently the Isle of Mull is in so I assume the Coll boat has made an attempt to go out at 12.00 but by now it should have made it to Coll at least so how come we don't yet know if it's aff?!?
