Rocket Post

A year ago, on December 1st, 2005, the film Rocket Post was screened in Stornoway's art centre An Lanntair. The film had been shot on the island of Taransay, site of the Castaway 2000 project.

Although Rocket Post was ready for release in 2003, it has taken another three years to find a distributor for the UK. The film will now be shown in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with screenings in An Lanntair during the week of December 14th.

During the 1930s, German scientist Gerhard Zucher came to the island of Scarp, west of Harris, to try out a novel technology for transporting mail between islands. After several test launches, the day came for him to pack his rocket with hundreds of pieces of mail. Unfortunately, his rocket exploded on the launch pad and the mail was scattered far and wide across Scarp. The island's postmaster retrieved a large number of scorched letters and posted them off by conventional means.

The film is loosely based on this story, with a certain amount of romance, antagonism with islanders against new technology and Germans coming to the island to retrieve their agent.

The film was also screened in Australia around Christmas 2005. It is worth seeing, and a great promotion for the Hebrides; the stunning landscapes do most of the talking.

I was asked by a philatelic friend to do a 1st day cover for the original screening, which I attended along with half the cast of extras, it was a wierd feeling, now I still have about 8 or 9 left, and would like to offload them to people who would appreciate them, so if anybody is interested get in touch. In the film they had Zucher shot by firing squad, however I have a cover signed by him ( at least I hope it's his signature ) Cheery Arnish keep up the good work.

There's an interesting feature on this on the Uig and Bernera community website.

Malkie from Glasgow

We here on Mull only know Mr Shorrock, the films producer, because he was the chap who proposed to erect 500 wind turbines on Ardnamurchan, Morvern and Mull. He was sure this was a good idea. I remember reading that he was also sure that this film would win an Oscar. Having seen the film Arnish, do you think this is likly Arnish ?

Oscar, Pondhead? I enjoyed the film, but an Oscar - no.

Apart from the great extras ( no not Ricky gervais ) the film/movie was average at best. Went too far with the love interest, and not enough of the quality extras available.

Thanks guys. As wind farmer / film producer Mark Shorrock elloquently said when talking about the film (The Scotsman 17.06.01) "People think of Great Britain as one big overcrowded concrete jungle but then you come to somewhere like this and see that it is almost a wilderness. This place is unique because the sense of isolation is so special. It also has an austere beauty; it combines Mediterranean seas with Highland scenery. That doesn't exist anywhere else in the world". Sounds like the film looks good but lack content - pitty.

What has happened to the march of the evil windmills?
