Road-equivalent tarriff has been introduced on the routes linking the Western Isles to the Scottish mainland today, slashing the single fare for a footpassenger to 拢7.25 on the Ullapool crossing. I hope it brings the much-vaunted hike in passenger numbers, otherwise someone will have to pick up the tab for the decreased revenue for Calmac. Calmac's annual losses (some 拢32m) are covered by government.
Earlier this month, I went to Orkney and came away with 1200 pictures of the trip, of which 700 were photographs of wargraves. 3 from the cemetery by St Magnus in Kirkwall, 125 from St Olaf's Cemetery on the road to Scapa Flow and 580 from the Royal Naval Cemetery at Lyness (Hoy). I'm currently gathering the info associated with the pics from Lyness. Took me 2 hours to go round there and snap the headstones.

Your landscape photographs are very evocative, AL! And the one of the Italian chapel brought back memories. I don't give a fig for religion but the chapel is a tirumph of the human spirit in adversity and the humanity of the Orkney people who see to it that it is kept neat and tidy. At the risk of being accused of levity, I'm sorry not to see EffCee in the Stromness picture. He wass perhaps still in the clink. Anyway, the weather hadn't changed from that during our visit in early July.

580 gravestones in Lyness. I assume that is all of them. We occasionally look in there. I am always struck by the poignancy of the place and appalled at the youth of some of the boys laid there. I think the ages range from 15 to late 60's the oldest being civilians who had worked at the base. Did you visit Kirkwall cemetery? There are some war graves there, notably a group of Norwegian merchant seamen lost when Norway was still neutral. They and the Norwegian graves in Hoy and Sanday are honoured each year on 17th May, Norway's national day, by members of the Orkney Norway Friendship Association. There are always a number of Norwegian visitors present as celebrating Sytttende Mai has become a tradition here over the last 25 or 30 years.

Stromness - Victoria Street (after a rare bout of rain): I wonder why the fish and chip shop, the ice-cream/hamper shop, etc, don't put some tables, chairs and parasols out (cars be d**ned). Make pretend it is Provence or some decadent place on the Med. Oh, the reason you don't see FC, Barney, is that Arnish did not take a picture of the front of the taverna.

No 11 includes two of the most marvellous emporia in the town...some might say two of the few remaining ones...The Waterfront Gallery and the Red Cross Shop. Nice of you to drop by Arnish...

I did not imply the chippy or the icecream parlor were in Arnish's snapshot numero 11 # But gimme me glasses, and let's see. RightO, there's the Red Cross shop (if it were to put a table on the imaginary curb with some special sale goodies, Marmalade in one corner, the Dragon and others might be sorely tempted. Marketing, dearieO). And of course THERE is the Waterfront Gallery (any hares romping in the window yet, FC?). How Arnish failed to put in another photo of the buff Bookman lost perusing a first edition Eric Linklater's tome, I cannot fathom (he is only a stone's throw away). And the taverna ... (not closed for lack of custom, surely?) ...

Next time I'm in Stromness, I'll certainly drop in, FC. Wasn't aware which emporia to visit, and on a flying visit at any rate.

I have been in Lewis since late 2004 and am observing life on this fascinating island from an outsider's perspective. I look out at the lighthouse every day - as it looks out over the island and the sea.
