Its not the Pier Arts Gallery but.....

I am going to blow my own trumpet now and blatantly advertise the fact that the Shapinsay Heritage Centre situated above the Smithy Restaurant is having an exhibition of Crafts and Art up until Christmas.

The members of the Art Classes that I attend have a collection of paintings etc on show and various goodies are for sale by the very talented ladies and gents of Shapinsay.

If you get time please come over you never know you might bump into me.

Remember its only 21 days to Christmas

Hi Barebraes, the chance of meeting with you would be good enough reason to visit the show. Is Hooch guarding the door?

If only I could ... Good luck with the exhibition!

Jill from EK

I see van Gogh's a member. He's lasted well.

No it's not the Pier but that is immaterial. Without the myriad small galleries all over the place the Pier and even the mighty Tate count for little. There needs to be a spectrum of talent and everyone who wishes to exhibit must start somewhere. Personally I love the little galleries of the world

Potato eaters: van Gogh of course, not Rembrandt, but somehow I have always associated it with Rembrandt. I first saw the van Gogh collection in Amsterdam (in the basement of the Stedelijk Modern Art Museum - was it not?) in my youth, long ago, before it moved into its new quarters. I guess I associate such stark gloominess with Rembrandt, and van Gogh with the sunny south of France. Strange how the mind works and how often first impressions have such overriding impact. I did make a pilgrimage (by bike) to Groot-Zundert, where van Gogh was born. Just for the heck of it. That's one thing in the Netherlands: take the train with bike, pedal, take the train home. As the country is mostly flat, with good bike paths, and if you are wise enough to go with the wind, biking is rather painless.

Perhaps I should sell my Sunflowers and retire. But as for cuting off my ear I don't think so

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Van Gogh and Rembrandt were painting by the sea one day and Rembrandt said, "Dammit, I've forgotten my palette knife!" "Don't worry, matey", says van Gogh, "I've got one 'ere." F'nar f'nar!! Keep up the good work Mrs B, and I'll commission a moody seascape for the office if you're up for it.

For symmetry's sake, Barebraes, keep both ears. ("Orff with both of them"! Surely not?). # I assume you go to Kirkwall for arts supplies, or do you get them shipped to you from far and wide?

mjc from NM,USA

Glad to hear that your in full time employment again Chopper. Moody landscape on its way. Mjc the art supplies come from various sources but I admit mainly from t'internet.

Barebraes from Shapinsay

mjc has now conjured up an image - van Gogh, Rembrandt and Orff all on the beach. Two painting and one humming O! Fortuna!

In one of the many episodes of Midsomer Murders, Inspector what's his name, went to an auction of local works by artists (incl. his wife), proceeds to a good cause. The artists' spouses spent good money to make sure they did not meet the rolling pin or worse accidents when they get home. Such is life.

mjc from NM,USA

Quite right too!

Flying Cat from mpu's not that daft!
