Adram Green

Adam after 11 miles

Adam's marathon diary 2009

Adam Green completes the 2009 London Marathon in four hours, 47 minutes and 41 seconds, raising 拢1500 for the children's charity Whizz Kidz.

Weeks to go: One!!

It's just so nerve wracking, this marathon lark.

You're nervous because the 26 mile route is looming large on the horizon, and you're nervous because you don't want to miss being there on the start line. Don't twist this, don't pull that, don't drop that anvil on your foot...

Tom and Jerry style injuries aside, I'm getting a little impatient now. I feel lethargic, slow and generally a bit irritable. This is because my training plan has all but gone out of the window since running 22 miles two and a bit weeks ago.

I've had a leg injury so my runs have been sporadic - not great preparation - but I keep reminding myself that I managed 22 miles over a surface more uneven than the world economy so I should be grand.

Last week I went to the Lake District for a bit of an Easter getaway. It was superb; great weather and great food. Maybe a little bit too much food...

Anyway, I burned all the calories off by running a few times and by doing some hill walking.

Mum, Dad, Lynn and I went up Black Combe, right in the west of the Lake District, and at 600 metres it was a good slog. It was also the windiest day ever recorded in the history of windy weather.

Mr Beaufort would have to have added another rating to his famous scale had he been clambering up the aforementioned fell with the four of us that day.

I fell over twice just from the sheer strength of the blasts coming off the Irish Sea. If you've ever had wind burn (no I haven't made that up) you'll know how I felt once back to the relative safety of the car...and then the pub.

Despite the tricky conditions it felt good to be out and moving. I've had to nurse my injury for a week and a half, and with only two runs left before the big day any chance to be active is a great relief.

So there you go. The next time you read this diary I will have finished (fingers crossed) the 2009 London Marathon. All the luck in the world if you're going to be in the nation's capital attempting the 26 miles with me and 30,000 others.

Photos next week on this page, and in the meantime if you fancy sponsoring me you just send me an email and I'll tell you all you need to know.

Thanks, and good luck!

Adam
