If
you are a fan of Kevin SmithÂ’s other New Jersey Chronicles (Clerks,
Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma) YouÂ’ll already be familiar with
Jay and Silent Bob and if youÂ’re like me you will have loved
them. But how will they fair in a full-length movie of their own?
For
those of you that havenÂ’t come across Jay and Silent Bob, IÂ’ll
tell you a little about their characters. Jay (Jason Mewes) is foul
mouthed, jumpy and along with his mostly mute sidekick Silent Bob
(Kevin Smith), is into cigarettes of the highly illegal kind.
This
story revolves around a road trip of sorts. Jay and Silent Bob discover
a movie is being made of the comic book based on them – Bluntman
and Chronic. But what inevitably comes with film adaptations is
criticism and Jay and Bob take the insults of their alter egos rather
personally. So to stop the onslaught off they trot to Hollywood
to sabotage the movie. This however is just an excuse to get the
boys into lots of scrapes including one with four PVC clad sex kittens.
Once they get to tinsel town they meet up with various faces from
their past appearances as well as the odd star or two (Mark Hamill
appears in a star wars style sketch)
So
back to my original question – do they work in a movie of their
own? Unfortunately, the answer isÂ…no. The acting isnÂ’t
bad - Kevin SmithÂ’s body language as Silent Bob raised the
occasional smile, and Jason Mewes gave his usual solid performance
as Jay. But after being bombarded by expletives in the first ten
minutes, which werenÂ’t actually funny, I lost interest. Once
we arrived in Hollywood it got slightly better but I think that
was just because you could play spot the star (Matt Damon, Ben Affleck,
Chris Rock). Maybe if it was a late night showing and you were an
18-year-old lad out with your mates after a few beers you might
enjoy it, but I certainly didnÂ’t. Jay and Silent Bob should
have stayed where they were – nice subplots in much better
movies.
