Sanjay
F Gupta's directorial debut film, Karam is a well-executed
fare, coupled with stylish picture frames and a great plot.
The
movie also scores high with the excellent and elegant cinematography,
neat direction and superbly executed action sequences.
Unfortunately,
it falters when it comes to the script.
John
(John Abraham) is an assassin who works for a gang headed by Captain
(Bharat Dabholkar).
One
day, John, with his two companions, kills an entire family. A little
girl, who is also hit, slowly loses her life in his arms.
This
incident emotionally affects John resulting his decision to quit
the business and start a new life with his girlfriend Shalini (Priyanka
Chopra).
Meanwhile,
the Captain is threatened by his rival, Yunus (Vishwajeet Pradhan).
Soon, Yunus decides to kill the Captain in order to rule the underworld.
But
during the attack, Captain manages to escape, prompting him take
revenge on Yunus.
So
a plan is hatched and Yunus and his associates are to be killed.
John it seems is the only man who can make this plan work.
But
how can he convince John to do the dirty deed when he has sworn
never to touch a gun again?
The
Captain blackmails him by kidnapping his girlfriend Shalini. He
must kill the rivals within 36 hours if he is to see Shalini alive.
From
this point on, twists and turns happen aplenty, but at the same
time we get to see the same scenarios which have been witnessed
many times in past Bollywood films.
Debutante
director, Sanjay F.Gupta does leave an impact especially in some
sequences.
These
include scenes when John massacres the whole family in the initial
reels. Also the scene when Priyanka slashes her wrists deeply shocks
you.
Another
scene which will grab your attention features Priyanka pleading
with a woman to use her mobile so that she can make a call to John
in a heavy monsoon downpour.
The
cinematography is stylish and eye catching. Action is simply superb
and holds your attention. Music by the duo Vishal-Shekhar is soothing,
with 'Tinka Tinka' and 'Koi Aisa Alam' the best songs in the film.
Amongst
the performers, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra are excellent.
They make a good pair on screen.
On
the whole, Karam has something novel in John Abraham. He
will no doubt pull the audience into auditoriums with his performance.
