A grim
drama depicting life around a Mumbai traffic signal.
Headed
by Silsila (Kunal Khemu), he leads a group of street characters.
These
include Rani (Neetu Chandra). She comes to Mumbai to make a living
by selling embroidered garments.
Then
there is Noorie (Konkona Sen), a prostitute. She has a soft spot
for Dominique (Ranvir Shorey), a drug addict who also begs from
car passengers.
Jaffar,
the local money collector who works for his boss, Haji (Sudhir Mishra).
This
film tries to show the harsh reality of life as seen through the
sensitive eyes of director Bhandarkar.
But
the director takes glimpses at these characters without delving
deep into their lives.
So
this is where this gritty celluloid falters. Of the cast, Ranvir
Shorey gives a superb performance.
His
acting has evolved since his last film, Khosla Ka Ghosla,
showing that he can be stretched even further given the chance to
do meatier roles.
Konkona
Sen is in true form as the street prostitute with her 'loud' attire
and makeup. Kunal Khemu as the soft natured Silsila, also stands
out in some scenes. But it is Neetu Chandra's kind hearted character
that tugs your heart strings.
She
is a sheer delight to watch on screen proving yet again that brilliant
actresses do exist in Bollywood these days.
See
this if you liked hard hitting movies like Corporate and
Page 3 from the same director.
Somehow,
Traffic Signal misses that touch altogether!
