大象传媒 Shropshire's Michael Cleere met two distinct groups in the Telford area
to find out more about the words and phrases they use to describe everyday
subjects. |
New College is a dedicated sixth form college, based in Wellington, but
offering full time education for 16-19 year olds across the Telford region.
There 大象传媒 Shropshire's Michael Cleere met four cleaners who keep the college
spick and span. Only Vicky was born in the area, while Gail, Claudette and
Marie have each lived here for over 10 years - all migrating a few miles
to arrive in the county.
Partners
|
The conversation came round to the
subject of partners. Members of the group revealed some very personal
(and unique) terms for their partners. Vicky started off the discussion
before Gail chipped in.

Gypsies
|
There are a lot of names for travellers
or gypsies that people are generally familiar with. However, Gail
introduced a new one which the rest of the group were unfamilair
with.

|
Lonsdale Court is a small development of sheltered housing flats in Telford.
There Michael Cleere met a group of four retired salopians. All four have
lived in Shropshire for a substantial period of time.
Three of the group (Alf, George and Trixie) are also retired teachers...
while Kate claims that she's a "graduate from the University of life".
Only Alf Jenkins is not from the Telford area, bringing his Clee Hill dialect
to the gathering. At least one, George Evans was living in this neck of
the woods long before Telford was created.
Meanwhile, Kate was born and brought up in Notting Hill, London and despite
living in Shropshire for many year retains a strong London dialect.
Pregnancy
|
One of the topics which the group
chose to chat about was pregnancy. It's a subject which has always
attracted colourful language. On the streets of Woodside, Michael
came across common phrases such "knocked up", "up
the spout" "up the duff" and "bun in the oven".
However, the Lonsdale Court group, and particularly Alf, come up
with a few new ones...

Sickness
|
The words we use to describe sickness
and ill health very much follow our social history. The Lonsdale
group, particularly Alf and Trixie, remember language which grew
out a time of poverty and pre-NHS (and pre-social security). It's
interesting to note that although times have changed, some phrases
have remained .
