Inside Sheffield Islamic Centre

Inside Sheffield's Islamic landmark

We went behind the scenes of Sheffield's biggest purpose-built mosque and Islamic Centre near London Road, which was funded by the community who use it.

Updated July 2008

A new landmark rises above the terraced houses of the Sharrow area of Sheffield. With its distinctive green domes and tall minarets, the city's biggest purpose-built mosque and Islamic Centre can't fail to grab the attention of locals and passing motorists.

The old Sheffield Islamic Centre on Wolseley Road

The old Sheffield Islamic Centre

The Muslim community had been looking for a suitable building or site in the south of Sheffield for around a decade and a half. Building of the Masjid - the Arabic word for mosque - on Wolseley Road began in September 2004, when just 拢500,000 of the estimated 拢3.5m development costs had been raised. The local community who use the mosque put together the funds to build it.

A former Co-Op stood on the spot of the new mosque and it served as the Masjid for over twenty years. The new building was designed by Archi-Structure Ltd, one of the leading mosque architects in the UK.

In July 2008, the mosque on Wolseley Road is almost finished; the structure and the rooms are complete - it's just the minor detail (the painting, Arabic calligraphy and texts) which is unfinished. It will cost the community 拢100,000 just to paint the dome from the inside.

Treasurer and Trustee of Sheffield Islamic Centre, Nawaz Khan, speaks about the design of the new building: "We've built Islamic features into it. We've gone for very much a Persian design and mixed it into the local environment, with arches, windows, a dome and听 minarets."

Jhangir Ahmed and the Treasurer and Trustee Nawaz Khan took 大象传媒 Radio Sheffield's Gareth Evans on a tour around and explained to him about the dome, the washrooms and Muslim traditions.

Shoes off

"Muslims pray on the floor. At home, they have a mat but in a mosque it's impossible to provide everyone with a mat. So you take your shoes off and pray on the clean carpet," explains Jhangir.

Jhangir Ahmed

Washroom

As Gareth and Jhangir walk down the corridor they come to a large washing area with 26 sinks. "Muslims pray five times a day and there's a process of washing," says Jhangir. "Firstly you wash your hands, then wash your mouth out, run water through your nose, wash your face, arms, over your head, back of your neck so your hair's wet, then your feet and your ankles. When you wash, the lord wipes away your sins. So for example if you spoke anything bad then the lord will wash that away before you pray.

The dome

Nawaz Khan is Treasurer and Trustee of Sheffield Islamic Centre. He says the mosque is well-used.

Nawaz Khan

"Approximately 1000 people will come to Friday prayer. There are a few hundred more in the holidays. The rest of the week, it's about 500 people coming in each day."

Gareth walks under the dome to hear the acoustics. "If you were at the back of the room you would be able to hear what was going on at the front. You don't need a mic even though it's a very big room!"

The room is surrounded by a balcony, specifically for the ladies. Gareth asks Nawaz why the segregation during prayers. "It's for religious reason. It's so no evil thoughts come to your mind when you are praying," says Nawaz.

Digging deep

Unlike many of the other major regeneration projects changing South Yorkshire's skyline, this build is paid for entirely by voluntary donations from the community who use it. So what leads a community to dig so deep in its pockets to construct on such a grand scale?

Azra

Azra, who can't wait for the new mosque to open.

Faith certainly plays a part and the Muslim community has a charitable tradition which sees a percentage of income and even young people's whole first pay packets being given to the mosque.

For many locals this is more than a place to pray: it has classrooms, a planned daycare centre for the elderly and will host inter-faith events. Anybody is welcome to visit the mosque - it's not just for Muslims.

This is a beautiful building adding character to an area of sheffield that largely needs revamping. The Muslim community in Sheffield needed something like this. We should be proud of how our ummah has come together and built a beautiful place of worship that accomodates for so many people.

dave newsome
why don't we have a photo on this site of the building now it's complete? i wanted to show my friend abroad.

Usman Tariq

THE MOSQUE IS WAY TOO BIG AND SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO GET BUILT IN ENGLAND LET ALONE SHEFFIELD. THIS HAS SPOILT THE VIEW OF THE SHEFFIELD CENTRE AND IT TOTALLY SICKENS ME!

I THINK THE MOSQUE IS TOTALLY OUT OF PROPORTION FOR THE AREA IT IS IN AND CAN ONLY FORSEE TRAFFIC PROBLEMS,IT IS A LOVELY BUILDING BUT PROBABLY BETTER IN A MUSLIM COUNTRY.DID YOU REALISE THAT AMERICA HAS OVER ONE THOUSAND MOSQUES IN A COUNTRY THAT SIZE,YET IN ENGLAND WE HAVE OVER ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED.I DONT THINK CHRISTIANS WILL HAVE MUCH CALL FOR THE SERVICES OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR THAT MATTER,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ALLREADY GIVEN MY DONATION AND URGE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME

Doug Candler
This is a welcome addition to the Sheffield skyline - it looks great from Meersbrook Park and I look forward to seeing the completed towers. It's evn more welcome as a sign of the self-confidence of the Muslim community in Sheffield. As a Quaker I don't expect to worship there but I am pleased for those who will. I'd love to have an opportunity to see inside.

sean
another buiding that will look totally out of place in sheffield. an absolute waste of money

Nick
I'm not looking forward to the amplified noise every day from the minoret caller.

Mrs Mahmood
I think the mosque is going to be beautfull when finished mashallah. Only if some people stopped breacking the windows there are peoples hard earned money in there so please belive in islam and let our mosque be built in peace

Radzi Harun, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Assalamualaikum, I would like to congratulate all Citizen of Sheffield for the mosque construction. As a former student at Sheffield Hallam University, I am so proud to read the warm welcoming messages from most of you be a muslim or not. Despite the bad exposure on muslim all over the world, you stand to be united. May Allah bless us all. thank you. I miss Sheffield.

Lahore is in Pakistan Azra . what is happening to the Masjid as the work seames to have stoped .

Azra
For people who dont know there are churches & other worship places in Islamic countries. There are a few churches in Pakistan & there is a Seikh temple in Lahore & both are Islamic countries

B Khan
The new mosque is a major accomplishment for the Sheffield Muslim community. It is a big and difficult step to take but it's rewards will be passed down to many generations and to people who took part in this good deed.

waqar
i think this is a brilliant acheivement even to raise 1.6 million from voluntry donations. i cant wait until the mosque is opened

Mike Proctor
Everybody must realise that ther is NO TAX MONEY being used as the council do not give to religious organisations. It is solely the community's money and good luck to them. There is a brand new church opening in Qatar and nobody has oppposed that (the sheikh is also paying for it too). So can people please see the larger picture and how this is good for the regeneration of our multicultural sheffield.

Brian
Only two comments First of all well done for the muslim comunity for getting such a large project of the ground. And for the sceptics! this has been funded by donations not by the council, stop spreading hate and negative press.

Sam Chesterton
I strongly feel that what the Islamic community in Sheffield is achieving to build from nothing but donations is something that deserves great respect. As someone that does not practise a religion I think that their beliefs are striving to serve the surrounding community and whatever a persons religion this is a just cause to donate to.

Jenny
The mosque looks great! There are lots of church's so why can't there be another mosque! Pakistan is a muslim country and there are many church's there as i have seen for myself, there is a large comunity of christians in many muslim countrys. Keep up the good work.

PNC
It's a hideously ugly building, it has fould coloured minarets! How did it get past the planners? It is a waste of money and far too ostentatious. Why couldn't they have built something simpler. I don't want to see the monstrosity everytime I drive to work!

Mrs Khan
I think these community faith pages are a good idea, I 've just been reading aboutthe sikh religion and I can go there for a meal if I need it. AS a student you run out of food sometimes. The picture of Azra is very unflaterring, it may artistic but certainly not nice.

rex
It is disheartning to read so many negative comments about the building of a new mosque in Sheffield. Since moving to Sheffield I have found the people of the city to be some of the most peaceful and tolerant in the whole UK, be they religious or secular. Would there be the same outcry if a mandir or gurdwara were to be built? Or indeed, another Christian church?

Nad
This is a Complex Procedure. The Sheffield Muslim Community is going through Extremes to successfully have this Dream accomplishied. This will be an Incredible Work of Art. Persons of any Race/Gender/Types, who wish to study ISLAM are Welcome. This Building will have a Great Impact for Sheffield, giving it a delightful scenery. In the name of ALLAH (swta)we should have this Masjid Completed. Thanks for reading. We Appreciate to hear you thoughts.

Shajeda
Glorious! The House of God, the place of worship- The Masjid!Whether a mosque is Enourmous or Small, Old or new, the purpose of it is to fufill the needs & necesities for the believer. If this is done so, then Sobhan'allah (Glory be to Allah)! Yet saying this, I'm sure like me, the Sheffield Muslim Community have been highly awaiting for a Purpose built "Central Mosque". Which Alhamdulillah (Praises be to Allah)we now can look forward to. (",) So far the Masjid is incomplete yet, it is Alhamdulillah looking breath takingly beautiful! The architecture is outstanding, the amenities that the Masjid is intending to provide in the near future, are also very much appreciated, and more over NEEDED...Now its a matter of making LOADs of Du'aa (Prayer) and to sit on the end of our sofas nibbling away on our fingers, waiting for the completion of Sheffield's Muslim Communities Finest Asset! Insh'allah (God willing!) Like all places of worship whetehr it be the Synagogue, Temple, even the Masjid, I strongly believe that all cities need a central based major place of worship for their belief. Unity is very important for all regions. A form of understandign is integral to stop violence, harm, and distress. As others have said this is a very good way inorder to develop a City. Thanks

Anne
I think that its about time the mosque was built in sheffield, if you consider other parts of england they have already established a multicultural environment! and as for other parts of the world theyre are some churches in muslim countries! i see this as a great development for the future & sheffield will be seen as a city where everyones religion & faiths are equally respected.

shoaeb
the masjis is looking so beutilful mashallah

Minara
a mosque is a mosue as long as you find a place to pray then that is enough. why shouldnt i use the new masjid buildiing, at the end of the day its still a mosque

IBRAR SHAH
IT,S EASILY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BULDING IN SHEFFIELD. WELL DONE TO ALL THE BROTHERS.TO ALL THOSE ENGLISH PEOPLE THAT THINK CHURCHES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE BULLT IN MUSLIM COUNTRIES THATS NOT TRUE.JUST GO TO PAKISTAN AND YOU WILL SEE THEM OVER THE MAJOR CITIES. AND I BELIEVE THAT'S GOOD THING.A PERSON WHO HATES HIS FELLOW MAN, WIL NEVER PROSPER MENTALLY OR PHSICALLY OR ENJOY LIFE PROPERLY.HE,S HATRED WILL ROT HIM AWAY.I THINK MOST ENGLISH PEOPLE ARE GOOD AND FAIR.AND WILL ACCEPT TIHS MOSQUE AS A SIGN OF TRUST GROWING FRIENDSHIP.

Faisal
I think this mosque will have such a great impression on how muslims really are in England, we are not barbaric as the media portrays us to be but we are peaceful and loving, we are not racist this mosque is open to anybody of any race or creed, u do not have to be a muslim to enter a mosque u just have to respect the rules within the holy place.

paige
even though i am a christian. i think it is a good idea to bild a mosque because it can also be used as a community center, to help the comuntiy.

girl from netheredge
the mosque only reflects to you what you think of Islam. Be open minded, there is too much propaganda showing Muslims in a bad light. The mosque doesn't affect me, whatis the problem? (not the council tax thing please)

Kennedy Jones
I have lived for more than 6 years in a muslim country, and as a christian i like to preach - i have never ever faced no predujice from the counrty i lived in , as we were the very minority. They treated us like brothers and sisiters and also donated large sums of money to build churches - i remember my freiend and co- worker who was muslim, he donated armound 拢2000 to the building of the church. He said to me we all like a place where we can find peace and bind the community together. I think its a fantastic idea, and have recently donated 拢2000 - peace in and out. Jones

Linda, Meersbrook
I've watched the building grow and love what I've seen so far. Although an atheist who will probably never use the Mosque, I appreciate what such a building must mean to those who will. I can not understand some of the antagonistic views - in fact I'm appalled by some of them - where is the tolerance that this country needs? Sheffield is a multi-cultural city, as is most of Britain. Has been for centuries. Let's appreciate other cultures and learn from them, not deride them. I wish the Islamic community all the best with their new Masjid building.

John
Great building and its good to see such structures and community buildings been constructed and it it good for the area, however it seems to go against all planning, can be seen from a distance coming down Chesterfield Road and the surrounding area, what would the planners say to a residential development of this scale, wheres the parking, the height compared to surrounding building, how does it blend in with the area?? Once again the planners do not make any sense, but that is the council for you.

khan Rotherham
i do appologies to the brothers who put their efforts in doing the great job but i do agree with Naz from Sheffield. what is the point having a hall for 2500 people when ther will be hardly 10 old people reading prayers in Fajar(morning). the cost to keep it running will huge and the world need our money as our african muslims brothers and sisters are starving to death. we could defenitly do with a smaller but active mosque.

Shehzad
There are divided opinions on the building of this mosque, as evident from the previous comments. There are concerns about the costs having to be met from public funds or increases in council tax, however, the muslims are raising this money from within their own community. Aesthetically, whether one believes it is beautiful or an eyesore, this judgement is entirely subjective, however more importantly, with such huge sums of money being spent, will it bring unity to the splintered muslim community, and be open to other people so they can learn about Islam? I'm very saddened to see comments such as "Islam is at war with the West", as it is unfair to assume that all muslims and Islamic states have the same policies and perspectives. The Islamic world has its own divisions, much as people in England might disagree with the Germans and French, although still consider themselves Europeans. I hope the mosque will be a place of harmony, moderation, tolerance, and not least of all, worship.

Peace Remember Abraham said: "O my Lord! make this city one of peace and security: and preserve me and my sons from worshipping idols. 14:35 I pray that God make Sheffield also a safe and secure city for all. just to note: no public spending money has been used in this project NOR REQUESTED! everyone is welcome to ask any questions, this is very important and prejudices arise from lack of knowledge i.e. ignorance, which is a rampant disease nowadays. i and also hope this projec results in something postive for everyone regardless of 'who' is behind it

LB
What a waste of space!

Lars
This would have been a good location for another pub!

Lawrence
What an eyesore! It screams "oppression", "death to independent thoughts" and "women are second-class beings". All symbols of religion make me feel nauseous, but this is by far the worst!

Jason
Firstly I would Like to say that this Mosque shows the Greatness and diversity of the community in Sheffield and Britain, to all those people who are ignorant and prejudice I would suggest they do some research on Churches in the Middle East such as the new 拢7 Million one built in Qatar on land donated by the Emir of Qatar: http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/1110/p07s01-wome.html I can already foresee someone will come out with the tired argument but what about Saudi Arabia!, well seeing as Saudi Arabia is the equivalent to Vatican City to Muslims lets wait for a Mosque to be allowed on the territory of Vatican City then lets complain. To all the morons who are saying the extra money will come from Council Tax increases I would ask have you not read the article properly?, the news piece says: "this build is being paid for entirely by voluntary donations"

jase
i have lived in sheffield all my life and over that time i have seen a divide in comunites black, white, and muslim hows is this new mosque going to help muslims intergrate into the main stream british society will this county ever learn by its past mistakes i think not

Razwan
WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO KNOW ISLAM AND MUSLIMS ARE THE MOST TOLERANT OF PEOPLE. THE MUSLIMS DO NOT BURN DOWN CHURCHES AND THEY DO ALLOW CHRISTIAN TO BUILD CHURCHES IN THEIR COUNTRIES.

alan
the mosque looks great, a nice looking building in a part of town thet needs brightening up. Whos cares if you would'nt be able to build a church in a muslim counrty - silly arguement. It makes sheffield look more progressive and, modern colourfull - well done to the muslims of sheffield to raise all that money for themsleves, we christins can learn alot from their admirable community spirit. I'd like,to have a look around it when its finished.

Masjid Watcher
What a magnificent building! But definitely not in keeping with the surrounding area by any stretch of the imagination. If, as I suspect, it will be mainly used by Muslims rather than other citizens then it is quite right that it's privately funded. Why should anyone else contribute ? As for community, yes it will benefit the Muslim community but probably very few others in the city. I hope it doesn't become a non-Muslim free zone, but sadly I think it probably will in time.

Zahra mohammad
Asalaam Aleykum,i'm proud to be in sheffield, there is peace in side, inshallah always it will stay in peace, inshallah you will get the money to complete it soon, may Allah bless all the community members, keep it up sun april 01 12:23 2006

The building of the mosque and the planned developmental activites for the area shows how well we can do when time, effort and the committment is given to invest in the communities we live in. Sheffield is one of the most diverse and multicultural cities in Europe and people from all faiths and backgrounds from Sheffield have prooved this with this venture. Most of the funding has come from the people of Sharrow and Netheredge and surrounding areas. Not even a penny has come from Public funding. The old Mosque played a crucial part in bringing the city together by holding area panel meeting, police and public safety, Day care centre was housed in the Mosque. It was well utelised by the all the community. I think those that have expressed any doubts need to visit the mosque and have quick chat it may get rid of their stereotypes. Well done Citizens of Sheffield! Let others follow your example!

Muslimah
MasAllah, the new mosque looks awesome. However it is important that we try and raise more money.

sally
islam is at war with the western world .what does sheffield do let them build a mosque .as the world gone mad , yes i think so

mr r ward
where are they going to get the extra 2 million from.let me tell you sheffield people in their council tax rises

Jim
I been living in china for 3 years where religious freedom is certainly not advocated. It makes me proud to be an Englishman and a sheffielder.Whether christians can or cant build churches in Muslim countries is not the question, the question is how can we accept each other in Britain? and accept that Britain is a diverse and multi-cultural island which we all should be proud to be a part of.

IT MAKES US PROUD TO SEE THE MASJID LOOKING BETTER EVERY DAY SO COME ON PEOPLE DIG YOUR HANDS DEEP DOWN IN YOUR POCKETS AND LETS GET IT FINISHED INSHALLAH !!!

Frank, Sheffield
I live quiet near the mosque, I think its good for the muslim community, I also think that people are opposing this, due to the current climate in relation to terrorism. However extremists exist in every religion, be it christianity, judasim, Islam.

steve sheffield
I understand people of all faiths need to find a place to worship, but wonder where christians would find a place to build and worship in a muslim country.

MS GUL
I AM PROUD OF ALL THE HARDWORKING MUSLIMS WHO ARE GETTING ALL THE MONEY FOR THE COMPLETATION OF THE MOSQUE.kEEP IT UP DAD

John
I live near the new Mosque and think it looks fantastic. Walk up the hill in Heeley and you can really see how it both fits in and stands out on the City's skyline. It's important that it fits into the community as a whole so I agree with the poster who suggested non muslims should be able to visit the place. I thought the peaceful protest in London recently was a perfect opportunity for British Muslims to demonstrate that Islam as a whole is not a religion of thoughtless hatred and the new mosque could be a useful tool in demonstrating the value of a spiritual centre in the community.

Saima Sheffield
The new mosque being built on Wosley Rd, shows solidarity amongst the muslim population and it is a proud achievement especially when no TAX PAYERS money has been used to fund this magnificiant building!!!!!!

Haroon, Doncaster
We are regular visitors of sheffield, and have drove past the new mosque, we think it's coming on nicely, and can't wait for it to be finished.

hal
why cant i have an extension on my house ,but a ugly mosque can be built without proper funding .

reach high sheffield
it loos beautiful and they have done a really good job if it

Lewis
I think it is disscracefull. For starters how would sheffield obtain the money? A tax raise; most likly! Apart from this I think it is an utter eyesoar! Me and my friends are outraged!

naz sheffield
the mosque looks great, however it is important to understand that this mosque should be for worshipping dawah purposes not for showing off. i think it is too expensive and should hav spent the money on other good causes like africa who are starving. More than likely the mosque will be empty BUT the attractive look to the mosque may attract non beleivers to the mosque and ask about islam. it should be noted everyone regardless of any religion should visit to increase islamic awareness. Allah Akbar

Razia kashif
I think the Mosque is very beautiful Mashallah, only seen it from outside. I live localy, I think its better for the communities, going to be lots of facilities under the one roof e:g for elderly,Men and women, children and funeral system and wedding hall (Mulana there as well)which is great because we only have few wedding hall in sheffield and going to same place again and again so this would be better.

Kelly - Sheffield
I think this is great. Sheffield is such a diverse city, and I think that all cultures should have a place where they live to worship their God, and I think more varied places of Worship should be built, I think they would add a different angle on Sheffield's regneration.

shoaib saleem
aslaamualaykum. The Masjid looks beautiful. It will bring the community together inshallah. may Allah bless younis Ahmed and all the community members who are taking part to complete the mosque. keep up the hard work.

Hi, i am currently british, Christian, is it possible Christians can use the Masjid Building

Rehana
I believe the mosque will be a key infrastructure within the local community and aswell will allow none muslims an insight into Islam. Its very important for everyone to keep up the generous donations

Ben Smith(Sheffield)
Yet another place to Preach Hatred for the Western World. When will we realise that separation spurns hate. Question: - Would Christians be able to build churches in Muslim countries or would they be burnt down. Or any other religious facilities? I think the building itself looks great on the city skyline, i just hope it is used for moderate Muslims not extremists!!

KATE
THE MOSQUE LOOKS BEAUTIFUL! I CAN SEE IT ALL THE WAY FROM MY WORK PLACE AT HALLAMSHIRE HOSPITAL

zobia
i recently went to see

Joy Norton Lees Sheffield
I've been watching the mosque grow. I hope they get the money to complete it soon. If anyone had any doubt that the islamic community were determined to be part of the British Community here is the proof. They've put their hearts and souls into a permanent place of worship. It's also a beautiful sight in a part of Sheffield that is bleak and run down. You don't have to be Islamic to find it inspiring

MIKE POUR

i think that the mosque looks brilliant!! i think it will bring the community together and bring the youth into the mosques and out of triuble in the streets. Keep it up Mash!!

I seem to remember something from the Rudyard Kipling story "Kim", in which, to quote in a loose manner, the observation was made that "The city was destroyed from within" Here is a classic example of what is happening in England, and has been allowed to happen for many years now.

TaymAllah (hajji) British rivert to Islam
Mosque (house of Allah) let us hope that this 2nd purpous built mosque(industry road being the 1st)in Sheffield does not stan 3/4 empty due to un islamic going ons . The majority of the Bengarli comunity have moved to a new venue on London road , will they ever returne. As like Industry road many splits in the islamic comunity has seen many mosques have open with empty spaces in them .Please lets us not forget Islam (i surrender to the will of Allah) and all sit to geather .If not 3.6 million could have been better spent .may Allah bless us all.

oum abd el rahim
hope that the new mosque will teach the real sharia tul ALLAH and sunit RASSOUL ALLAH PEACE UPON HIM without interfiring from any gamaat islamia or hizb ul tahrir

I think it's good that this new mosque is being built but all the news coverage about terroists and mosques i really feel that people will give there money elsewhere.
