There are countless opportunities to volunteer in nature and wildlife organisations in South Yorkshire. If getting back down to nature is something you fancy, read on.

:: Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield

Ecclesall Woods in Sheffield needs volunteers to help with:

  • surveys
  • identifying and ageing tree species
  • conducting wildflower surveys
  • putting up bird boxes
  • helping protect badger setts

:: Carbrook Ravine near Sheffield

Carbrook Ravine is right at the heart of a residential area near the centre of Sheffield. It's a mix of woods, scrub and grasslands and it supports a rich variety of plants.

Volunteers can take part in skylark surveys, tree clearance and habitat maintenance for small mammals like voles.

:: Potteric Carr

Potteric Carr is two miles from Doncaster and is dissected by the east coast main line. Volunteers are always needed to work on the 500 acres of open water, reedbed and woodland.

:: Art In The Park

Monthly events at Netherthorpe, Upperthorpe and Langsett using creative activities like photography, sculpture and juggling as a way to interact with each other and the local environment.

:: BTCV - Practical Conservation Volunteers

Hands-on practical conservation projects whatever the weather.

:: Campaign To Protect Rural England (CPRE)

The CPRE require a volunteer to help monitor and investigate planning applications in South Yorkshire. No experience is necessary as training will be provided. You must be willing to work without close supervision and be prepared to undertake some travel within the region.

:: Friends Of Chapeltown and High Green Parks

Volunteers are needed to help improve and maintain the condition of the parks, through regular litter picks and bulb and shrub planting in conjunction with local rangers.

A Public Relations volunteer is required to look after publicity for the group - someone familiar with public relations and media to raise our profile in local newspapers/brochures and seek sponsors for events in the park.

:: Friends of the Peak District

Conservation volunteers are required for sites in the Peak District National Park. Help maintain the most beautiful landscapes and develop practical skills in walling, fencing, tree-felling, path-building etc. No experience necessary, full training will be provided.

:: Gleadless Valley Stewardship Project

The Gleadless Valley Stewardship Team are looking for volunteers to help out either on a one-off or long-term basis. They carry out practical conservation tasks, family event and education events.

:: Heeley City Farm

Heeley City Farm needs general volunteers to help with gardening, animal care, composting, work in the cafe, garden centre and working with adults with learning difficulties.

:: LEAF (Local Enterprises Around Food)

If you want to learn gardening skills and share fruit and veg, LEAF is looking for a gardening volunteer for its Community Allotments Project.

:: North Sheffield Conservation Group and Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust

Meet new people, get fit and learn new skills in practical conservation. Monday to Thursday and every other Saturday morning.

:: Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)

Work in the Reserve Visitor Centre welcoming visitors, providing information about the Reserve and assisting with the small retail outlet.

:: Sheffield General Cemetery Trust

Fundraiser, data inputters, office volunteers, environmental workers and gardener needed to volunteer in preserving the landscape and buildings of Sheffield.

:: Sheffield Wildlife Trust

SWT need people to help plan and organise community events, set up and manage stands selling merchanise and membership, fundraise and talk to the general public about the work of the Trust.

:: Tinsley Tree Project
