Born
in Thorne, near Doncaster, in 1955, Garrett has been responsible
for introducing opera to a much wider audience.
The
daughter of a railwayman who become a school master, Garrett has
needed all her father鈥檚 determination to carve out a successful
career.

Garrett
lost her voice in the mid 80s. Thankfully, she's back to strength
now. |
After
spending six years at the Royal Academy of Music studying to be
a Soprano, Garrett debuted at the Wexford Festival before joining
the English National Opera in 1984.
Garrett鈥檚
battling qualities were needed after the break-up of her first marriage,
and even more so when she lost her voice in the mid 1980s.
Her
voice restored in 1985, Garrett made the transition from opera singer
to pop star with the release of albums Diva!, Prima Donna and Simple
Gifts.
Another
release, Soprano in Red, won the 1996 Gramophone award for best-selling
classical album of the year.
More
recently, forays into television such as Viva La Diva! and Lesley
Garrett Tonight have complimented Garrett's work with The Royal
Opera and English National Opera.
Lesley
performed at the Queen's Golden Jubilee Concert, but still maintains
strong links with her home town - supporting Doncaster's bid to
become a city, and performing at events to raise money for local
theatres.
