Fort William upset Newtonmore in MacTavish Cup

Lower league Fort William survived a first half red card to create the upset of the season, defeating Newtonmore 4-3 in the semi finals of the MacTavish Cup for shinty’s north area championship.

In the final at Newtonmore on 8 June, Fort will meet holders Kingussie who had a straightforward 3-0 home win over Skye.

The Celtic Society Cup final at Yoker on 29 June will match holders Oban Camanachd, who eliminated Inveraray 4-0, and Kyles who took extra time to defeat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-1.

Kinlochshiel moved up to third in the Premiership when they edged Lovat 1-0 at Balgate and Glenurquhart suffered their ninth consecutive defeat, 5-0 away to Caberfeidh.

At a Aird, Fort stormed to a 3-0 lead in just 16 minutes with goals from Cam Stephen, Lachie Shaw and Graham Campbell.

Craig Ritchie pulled one back for Newtonmore and Shaw restored Fort’s three-goal lead on the stroke of half time, by which point Campbell had been sent off.

The extra man allowed Newtonmore to narrow the gap through a Jonny Forster own goal and Martin Hall, but Fort survived a fraught finish.

Ruaridh Anderson and Dylan Borthwick in the first half and Lee Bain in the second saw Kingussie comfortably through.

Daniel MacCuish gave Camanachd a half-time lead, which a Ross MacMillan hat trick then quadrupled.

Craig Anderson edged Mid Argyll ahead on the hour in the other Celtic Society tie but David Zavaroni quickly ensured extra time, where Luke Thornton and Ross MacRae sent the tie Kyles’ way.

Jordan Fraser got the only goal at Balgate, which brings Shiel in touch with Kingussie at Lovat at the top.

Doubles from Craig Morrison and Kevin Bartlett and a goal from Jamie MacKintosh saw Caberfeidh comfortably home.

Beauly went six points clear in the National Division but with three extra games played after a surprisingly tight 2-1 home win over bottom side Bute.

Calum MacDougall scored four as Kilmallie overwhelmed Oban Celtic 6-2.
