West Brom see off Preston to cement play-off place

Goals by Alex Mowatt, Kyle Bartley and Darnell Furlong ended West Bromwich Albion's losing streak as they overcame Preston to rubber-stamp their play-off place.
Mowatt netted a penalty in first-half injury time to put the Baggies ahead after Furlong was brought down by Preston鈥檚 Liam Lindsay.
Albion centre-back Bartley then headed in Furlong鈥檚 long throw after the break to double his side鈥檚 advantage.
Furlong added his name to the scoresheet, tapping in Conor Townsend鈥檚 cross to score West Brom鈥檚 third and confirm a fifth-place finish.
Albion, who went into the game on the back of three straight defeats, were on top from the first whistle as they piled pressure on the Preston goal.
Grady Diangana forced Freddie Woodman into an early stop, while Brandon Thomas-Asante might have done better with a close-range attempt, pouncing on a free-kick to fire narrowly wide.
Woodman was called into action again with a double save late in the first half, pushing away Mikey Johnston鈥檚 low drive before denying Conor Townsend on the follow-up.
But the Baggies finally broke through on the stroke of half-time as Furlong turned Lindsay inside the box and was brought down, enabling Mowatt to step up and slot away the spot-kick.
It was the midfielder鈥檚 first goal since scoring in West Brom鈥檚 4-0 success at Deepdale seven months ago 鈥 and the home side set about doing their best to repeat that scoreline after the break.
Bartley and Cedric Kipre both went close from Mowatt corners, while the lively Johnston set up another opportunity that Thomas-Asante steered over the bar.
But Albion gained some breathing space when Furlong hurled a throw-in towards the penalty spot and Bartley鈥檚 header looped over Woodman and into the Preston net.
Townsend then stormed into the box and cut the ball back for Furlong to make it 3-0 seven minutes later and secure the Baggies鈥 first appearance in the play-offs since 2019, where they'll face Southampton.
Post-match reaction
West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan said:
鈥淭he first target, to reach the play-offs, is done, and now we will work towards the next one. I鈥檓 happy to have the possibility to do it with this group of players. They deserve, over the season, the position we鈥檝e achieved today.
鈥淭he play-offs give you the step that allow you to fight for promotion. Unfortunately last year we couldn鈥檛 achieve it, but this year we have.
鈥淲e know we are going to have a massively strong test, because Southampton are a team that were in the Premier League last year and who deserve their position too.
鈥淲e know how difficult the new target, which is Wembley, will be to achieve, but we are going to make our best [effort].鈥
Preston manager Ryan Lowe said:
鈥淲e were nowhere near the level. It鈥檚 been disappointing for everyone involved, the fans and hierarchy, because we wanted to finish the season on a high.
鈥淚t鈥檚 my job to find solutions and be better next season. The recruitment has already started, to find more leaders, more quality for when we have a burst of injuries as we鈥檝e had.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 think my team would have given in like it looks like they have - that鈥檚 disappointing. We have to make up that gap.
鈥淏ut I believe in my ability, my staff鈥檚 ability, the players we鈥檝e got at our disposal now and I think we can achieve some great things and keep pushing on.鈥
