Guernsey 400m runner Cameron Chalmers says he is aiming to step up to the international stage after finishing second at the UK Indoor Championships.

The result was the best in the 19-year-old University of Bath student's career, although he missed out on a place at the World Championships.

"This season, the real goal is to qualify for the World Juniors in the summer," Chalmers told ����ý Guernsey.

"But the life goal would be to be picked for an Olympic squad."

Chalmers has only been fully-committed to the sport for a couple of years and believes he will only improve as he gains more experience:

"Age does make a big difference," he said.

"I haven't been in the sport for very long really, maybe two years seriously, so when you go to these competitions you're competing against senior athletes who could have been in the gym or training for six or seven years.

Chalmers clocked 48.05 secs, just 0.05 behind winner Nigel Levine and 0.02 ahead of third-placed Alex Boyce, in a what was a tight finish.

"If someone said at the the start of the season that I would get the silver I'd have been quite surprised," he added.

"But by the time of the final you've got to go into races believing you've got a chance of winning and be confident.

"Up the back straight of the second lap I was in fourth and finished really strong and nicked the silver by a couple of hundredths, so I was really pleased."
