12 of the 30 MLB teams qualify for the post-season with the ultimate goal of reaching and winning the World Series at the beginning of November.

To decide the winners of the American League and National League who compete in the World Series, the teams play a knockout competition throughout October.

The Wild Card (a preliminary round) begins on Tuesday with a 3-game series to decide the final four teams from each league.

These teams then play knockout games in the best-of-five Division Series, with the winners advancing to the best-of-seven Championship Series.

The Championship Series winners are crowned American League and National League champions respectively and move on to the best-of-seven World Series.
