Rangers manager Ally McCoist has confirmed his interest in Arsenal striker Rhys Murphy.

The 20-year-old is on the lookout for a new club, having failed to break through at the Gunners.

"Rhys Murphy came up and played a closed-doors game for us yesterday and did fine," said McCoist.

"He's gone back home. He has an international and he is going to come up and join us again towards the end of next week."

Murphy, an FA Youth Cup winner in 2009, spent time with Middlesbrough last week.

The news of Rangers' interest in Murphy came as Blackburn Rovers looked poised to beat the Scottish champions to the signature of Dundee United and Scotland striker David Goodwillie.

McCoist appears to have missed out on another target, Den Haag winger Wesley Verhoek.

Following reports linking Dutchman with Fulham, there were suggestions that the 24-year-old has agreed a four-year deal to move to Ajax for 拢1.2m.

After Saturday's 2-0 win over St Johnstone, McCoist had said: "He is a player we have watched and who we like.

"The first bid went in eight or nine days ago. There is an opportunity that could possibly happen, but we haven't taken it any further yet."

Verhoek had also attracted the interest of Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Feyenoord this summer.
