England defender Chris Smalling ruled out of Euro 2012

Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling will miss Euro 2012 with a groin injury.

Smalling suffered the injury during last Sunday's 2-0 victory over Swansea.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed: "Chris has suffered a bad injury. It is a groin muscle injury and he'll miss the European Championship."

Striker Danny Welbeck will miss the final game of the season at Sunderland with an ankle injury but Ferguson said: "He should be fit for the Euros."

The 22-year-old, who has played for England schoolboys, the Under-20 and Under-21 teams, has won three England caps and made his debut in the 3-0 Euro 2012 qualifying victory in Bulgaria on 2 September 2011.

New England manager Roy Hodgson is due to announce his 23-man squad for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine on Wednesday, 16 May.
