Burnley have completed the signing of defender Luke O'Neill from Mansfield Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with the Championship club.

The Clarets had an initial bid for O'Neill turned down by the Blue Square Bet Premier club last month, but succeeded with an increased offer.

"As a manager you always want players snapping at the heels of those wearing the shirts. To do that we need to build a squad," said Burnley boss Eddie Howe.

"To be successful you need that strength in depth and Luke is a welcome addition.

"He is in the attacking mould and likes to get forward. He has a lot of assists to his name and, although he prefers right-back, he can play in a variety of positions across the back," Howe told the

"He brings that versatility and has huge potential. We look forward to working with him and hopefully improving him as a player."

O'Neill joined Mansfield from Leicester City last summer and attracted the attention of a number of Football League clubs during an impressive first season at Field Mill.

Mansfield manager Paul Cox said: "It's a very good deal for the football club.

"The chairman (John Radford) has given the go-ahead for the money received to be used to strengthen the squad.

"Luke's time with us saw him develop into a fine young footballer. He has time on his side to play at the highest level and I'll be following his progress with interest."
