Scott Laird scored twice as Preston bounced back from defeat at the weekend to thump Hartlepool.
Joel Byrom fired home the first into the top corner before Stuart Beavon's wonderful curler doubled the lead.
Substitute Jack King headed in the third from Beavon's cross to put Preston firmly in control.
Laird then struck twice in the last seven minutes to make it three wins from their last four games for Graham Westley's side.
