Coventry 2-1 Morecambe

League One Coventry advanced to the FA Cup third round relatively untroubled with victory over League Two Morecambe.

An uneventful first half was sparked into life by Gary McSheffrey scoring from the spot, after the forward was fouled by Shrimps keeper Barry Roche.

The Sky Blues were 2-0 up 17 seconds into the second half after Carl Baker curled into the top corner.

Kevin Ellison did reduce the arrears with a sublime effort, but the hosts held on for victory.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Coventry City boss Mark Robins told 大象传媒 Coventry & Warwickshire:

"It was closer than it should have been, partly because for the second time in a week we've had a goal disallowed which shouldn't have been, but we're delighted to be in the hat and I thought we created enough chances to have won further.

"The move that led to Gary [McSheffrey's] penalty was superb and [Carl] Baker's goal was brilliant.

"I think that today was about getting through. It was a difficult game, we've won at home, and the supporters will have gone home fairly happy with it.

"We've done more than enough to score more goals. Initially we didn't know whether to stick or twist, whether to press forward, but we got into the ascendancy and deservedly won the game."
