Wenger on Beckham and Villa speculation

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out the prospect of securing David Villa before the transfer deadline because "Barcelona don't want to sell".

The Gunners boss has been for Villa, who has scored 53 goals in 85 games for Spain.

"If somebody is not for sale you expect other clubs not to try and buy him," said Wenger.

"Barcelona don't want to sell David Villa and have made it clear."

Wenger says Theo Walcott's decision to commit to the club means he is not "desperate to buy" before the window closes on Thursday.

But he will add to this squad if it will help strengthen Arsenal's chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

"We have enough in terms of numbers. We have plenty of quality strikers," he added.

"Theo's deal sends out two messages. The first is that we want to keep our best players and are able to do that.

"The second is that attacking wise we are not in a position where we are desperate to buy because Theo can play through the middle and down the flanks.

"What is important is that you bring in players who can strengthen your team. Or you stay strong enough and do nothing."
