Carlisle 0-3 Walsall

  • Published

Will Grigg's first senior hat-trick extended Walsall's unbeaten run to five games as the Saddlers beat Carlisle to raise their League One play-off hopes.

Grigg's first came from a third-minute penalty after home keeper Mark Gillespie had upended James Chambers.

Grigg's 66th-minute second came when he received the ball from Andy Taylor in the box and engineered space to finish.

He sealed victory late on after Febian Brandy's burst, firing in the rebound after his first shot was blocked.

The Northern Ireland striker's treble takes the Saddlers top scorer's tally to 14 goals for the season.

We could have scored six - Grigg

"We've dominated the game. It could have been six or seven.

"It felt the second goal was never going to come but, once it did, it killed the game off and we were in control and Febian Brandy's done amazingly again to create the third.

"I've had chances to get a hat-trick before so it was overdue. I managed to get the match ball off the ref and they've let me keep it."
