Paolo Di Canio insists Sunderland are not safe from relegation

Manager Paolo Di Canio says Sunderland cannot consider themselves safe from relegation despite victory over Everton moving them six points clear of the bottom three.

Stephane Sessegnon's goal just before half time gave Sunderland their second consecutive win.

"I don't think it is enough. Every weekend we can change the prediction for who will go down," said Di Canio.

"Once again it was one step forward but the main job is not done."

When Di Canio was named manager of Sunderland at the end of March, the Black Cats were 16th and just one point above the relegation zone following a run of eight games without victory.

They suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in the Italian's first game in charge before claiming a historic 3-0 win at Newcastle - their first at St James' Park in 13 years - last Sunday.

Everton provided a much sterner test but Sunderland defended resolutely in the second half to ensure they recorded back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

"Once again I am very happy for my players, they gave everything on the field and I can't ask for anymore," added Di Canio.

"I am very happy. It is another win and an important one for the squad and the environment. It is important we put in consistent performances that give you the correct results and the points."

Saturday's win was only Sunderland's fifth at the Stadium of Light this season and with Stoke and Southampton still to travel to the north east before the end of the season, Di Canio is determined to make his side harder to beat at home.

"You can feel the atmosphere in the stadium and you can see the lift that it gives to the players," he added.

"The Stadium of Light must become our fortress. We must give our best like we did today.

"We gave a lot of satisfaction to our fans. I feel responsible for many people here and if we can deliver the right job and make the fans proud, then I am very happy."
