Maynor Figueroa: Wigan defender ruled out for the season

Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa will miss the final four Premier League games of the season and the FA Cup final with a groin injury.

The 30-year-old Honduras international was carried off on a stretcher during Saturday's 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

"Scans confirmed our worst fears. He is going to be out for the rest of the season and probably a longer period," said Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.

Figueroa had missed only one league game this season through suspension.

The Latics are 18th in the Premier League and five points from safety, although they have a game in hand on their nearest rivals Newcastle, Aston Villa and Sunderland.

But Martinez says the injury could not have come at a worse time as his side battle for survival.

"He is Mr Reliable, someone who has never missed any sort of time during the time he has been at Wigan Athletic," said the Spaniard.

"Unfortunately he is now going to miss the most important period in a season."

Fellow defender Antolin Alcaraz is still injured with a hamstring injury but Martinez hopes the Paraguay international should be back in contention after Saturday's game away at West Brom.
