Charlie Austin marked his full Queens Park Rangers debut with a third-minute goal to set his side on their way to a Capital One Cup win over Exeter City.

It was a comfortable victory for Harry Redknapp's side, who went in front when Austin, signed from Burnley, deflected in Jermaine Jenas's shot.

Danny Simpson doubled Rangers's lead after the break with a low shot.

Exeter's Arron Davies and QPR's Shaun Wright-Phillips both hit the crossbar in the second half.

The visitors, who opened their season with a 2-1 Championship victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, were always in control once Austin's deflection flew past Artur Krysiak.

Clint Hill had a header well saved while Junior Hoilett was causing problems on the flanks as the Grecians looked in danger of being overwhelmed.

However, Paul Tisdale's men slowly grew in confidence and Liam Sercombe forced Rangers goalkeeper Brian Murphy into a good save.

Simpson looked to have put the tie beyond Exeter's reach with his low finish after the break but the League Two side rallied and Davies rattled the woodwork.

Wright-Phillips was introduced by Redknapp and his pace caused the hosts further problems, the England winger almost trebling his side's lead when he cut inside and hit the bar.

Rangers will now go into the hat for the second-round draw, to be made on Thursday.
