Accrington Stanley 1-1 Southend United

  • Published

Luke Prosser's late header earned Southend a point at Accrington.

Stanley led with an own goal from Mark Phillips, the Shrimpers' centre-back turning Lee Naylor's cross into his own net just after the hour mark.

Home keeper Andrew Dawber made a series of fine saves, twice denying Michael Timlin, while George Bowerman twice failed to hit the target for the hosts.

And Dawber was powerless to prevent Prosser nodding in Kevan Hurst's corner to ensure the points were shared.

Southend are still in the play-off places, three points behind leaders Chesterfield, while Accrington are three points above the relegation zone.

Accrington manager James Beattie told ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Lancashire:

"Southend are as good a side as we've played. It shows how far we've come to be disappointed not to take all three points.

"We showed excellent passages of play and some excellent defending, apart from their goal.

"The centre-half has headed it unmarked and it's just a lack of communication. It's unfortunate that one of the smallest things in the game is the thing that's cost us two points."
