Bolton Wanderers 0-1 Burton Albion

  • Published

League One's Burton caused a League Cup first round shock by beating Championship side Bolton.

Matthew Palmer was the match winner for the away side, as his deflected strike wrong-footed goalkeeper Ben Amos with just three minutes left on the clock.

Burton could have gone ahead earlier through John Mousinho, who drove straight at Amos.

The home side should have led at half-time but striker Gary Madine headed over the crossbar from close range.

Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told 大象传媒 Radio Derby:

Hasselbaink on Bolton v Burton

"It was hard. Look we are at Bolton away - a big club. Good players. We knew it was always going to be hard, difficult. We knew at times we were going to have our back against the wall and defend in numbers. I thought we did that.

"You know in these matches that your goalkeeper is going to get some work and that he has to be in the best form and I think he was. Our back four looked good. Then you get a moment and we have players who can give you those moments.

"We had to change things tactically after 20 minutes and after we did that we looked really good."

Bolton boss Neil Lennon: "We should have been three or four up at half-time.

"I'm disappointed to go out but not with the way we played. I think we had 30 attempts at goal and they've scored with a huge deflection.

"You have to be better in front of goal with the final ball and final finish. Our football was good tonight, we dominated the game and we should have won."

Burton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink: "We soaked it up, we were organised, we were disciplined.

"Bolton are a very good side and they have some players who can really hurt you, especially in the first 20 minutes they made it very, very difficult.

"You know when you're going to come here it is not going to be easy, you know you have to be stubborn in a way."
