Padraig Amond headed Newport ahead after 40 minutes from a Mickey Demetriou cross

Newport County edged past Crawley Town and into the play-off places in front of a crowd of 5,741 at Rodney Parade.

Newport hit the bar twice in the first half through Robbie Willmott and Padraig Amond and it was Amond who opened the scoring after 40 minutes.

Mickey Demetriou made it 2-0 from the penalty spot but Jimmy Smith pulled one back for Crawley after the restart.

Harry Kewell's Crawley searched for an equaliser but could not break through a resilient Newport defence.

Newport boss Mike Flynn told 大象传媒 Sport Wales: "It was a hard-earned [win], a game of two halves. We were absolutely superb in the first half. We played them off the park and should have been out of sight.

"But they were the better side in the second half and after the mistake for the goal, it was all a bit tense."
