Manchester City were knocked out of the Women's Champions League at the round of 32 stage as they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid.

With the score 1-1 going into the game, City went a goal down within four minutes when Silvia Meseguer slotted home at the back post for the visitors.

Atletico doubled their lead just before the break when Ludmila da Silva fired past home goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.

Jen Beattie had a goal disallowed for offside late on as City crashed out.

City, who were seeded for the draw for the first knockout round, have reached the semi-finals in Europe in both of the past two seasons.

However, they were drawn against arguably the toughest of the non-seeded teams in a talented Atletico outfit, who deserved their win at the Academy Stadium.

The hosts had fought to try to get themselves back into the match, with Nikita Parris hitting the crossbar from a tremendous volley in the closing stages.

Chasing three goals to win the tie after Da Silva's first-half strike, Caroline Weir also hit the bar with an audacious strike from distance but City could not find the net.
