FA Cup: Crewe 0-1 Carlisle United highlights

A piece of opportunism from Jamie Devitt booked Carlisle their place in the FA Cup second-round draw with a 1-0 win at Crewe.

The midfielder chased down a slack back-pass in the last minute and benefited when Crewe keeper Ben Garratt's clearance rebounded off him and went into the net for the Cumbrians' winner.

The tie was heading for a replay at Brunton Park after Carlisle skipper Danny Grainger wasted a first-half penalty, with his kick saved by Garratt, who was redeeming himself after tripping striker Richie Bennett in the six-yard box.

In a game of few clear chances, Chris Porter, one of five changes boss Dave Artell made to his Crewe side, dragged an early effort past the far post.

But it was Carlisle who posed the bigger threat. Devitt's volley dropped just over the home bar and Regan Slater's low drive flew through past a post through the arms of Garratt.

After the restart Carlisle were glad of Adam Collin's agility, with the keeper turning around a 25-yard curler from Charlie Kirk.

Garratt thwarted Hope and Grainger at the other end, but Crewe had leading scorer Jordan Bowery and former Carlisle striker Shaun Miller on in the closing stages and were pushing for a winner before conceding at the other end.
