Port Vale 1-2 Sunderland
Sunderland narrowly beat League Two Port Vale to progress to the second round of the FA Cup.
The Black Cats raced into a two-goal lead thanks to George Honeyman's well-taken strike after just 38 seconds before Lynden Gooch scored their second with a low effort after 19 minutes.
Vale got back in the game before the break when veteran striker Tom Pope showed good composure to slot in.
Honeyman could have wrapped up the win but his effort was well kept out by home keeper Scott Brown before Pope nearly scrambled in a late equaliser.
Victory meant the League One side, playing in this round of the competition for the first time since 1987, avoided being knocked out in the first round for the first time since the 1923-24 season.
