Bristol Rovers have signed Max Ehmer on a two-year deal after the defender's contract at fellow League One side Gillingham expired.

The 28-year-old made more than 200 league appearances in six years with the Gills, having initially joined on loan from Queens Park Rangers in 2014.

"Max is a very good defender who is proven at this level," said Rovers boss Ben Garner.

"The other thing Max brings to us is leadership."

Gillingham chairman Paul Scally said he and manager Steve Evans "very much wanted" Ehmer to remain at Priestfield Stadium, but the impact of the coronavirus pandemic has affected their ability to offer new contracts this summer.

"Our strategy was that we wouldn't offer any player any contract until we knew what the future held," Scally told 大象传媒 Radio Kent.

"We did feel we would be able to give Max an offer before the end of July.

"You have to accept there are clubs that have got funds and are prepared to take the risk. We weren't in a position to do that."
