Xherdan Shaqiri will fly to Spain for Switzerland's Nations League game after testing negative for Covid-19.

The Liverpool midfielder, 28, was self-isolating, along with team-mate Manuel Akanji, after testing positive before Wednesday's friendly defeat by Croatia.

But Akanji returned the only positive result from the latest round of tests by the Swiss Football Association.

It said: "The Uefa health committee must now decide on [Shaqiri's] eligibility to play on Saturday."

After playing Spain in Madrid on Saturday, Switzerland face Germany in Cologne on 13 October, also in the Nations League.

"Manuel Akanji is in isolation and continues to show no symptoms," added the Swiss Football Association.

"All other players and staff members of the national team are flying to Spain this afternoon [Thursday]."

Shaqiri was the third Liverpool player to contract Covid-19 within a week, after Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane.

The ex-Stoke and Bayern Munich winger has played once for the Reds this season, in the Carabao Cup at Lincoln on 24 September, and has not made a Premier League matchday squad.
