Kevin O'Hara pounced in injury time to sink Arbroath and earn Dunfermline Athletic a first win in four Scottish Championship outings.
The second-place hosts remain three points behind Hearts after forward O'Hara headed home Josh Edwards' cross in a dramatic finale.
Colin Hamilton almost grabbed an early lead for Arbroath with a 25-yard strike that struck the right-hand post.
Dunfermline hit back and Dom Thomas forced a fine save from Derek Gaston.
At the other end, Owain Fon Williams had to be at his best to keep out a shot from Luke Donnelly as the chances kept coming for both sides.
Kyle Turner fired wide for Dunfermline after the break and the game looked to petering out to a draw before O'Hara snatched the points.
It keeps Arbroath second bottom, a point clear of Queen of the South and two adrift of Alloa Athletic.
Dunfermline manager Stevie Crawford: "It is a big three points. I'm delighted for the team and with Owain for keeping a clean sheet.
"Our points total so far shows our commitment, desire and energy and we want to build on this start."
