Wycombe Wanderers beat Exeter City 4-3 on penalties to make the second round of the Carabao Cup, despite being reduced to nine men through injury.

Joe Jacobsen had what proved to be the best chance of the night in a drab goalless draw when he hit Exeter's near post with an in-swinging corner from the right after 20 minutes.

Having made all their substitutions Wycombe were reduced to 10 men with just under half an hour left after Jason McCarthy was injured and lost Daryl Horgan with two minutes to go.

Wycombe keeper David Stockdale saved three penalties, including the crucial sudden-death effort from James Dodd to send the Chairboys through.

Wycombe, who made seven changes, had the better of the first half hour as Sullay Kaikai had a shot saved from the edge of the box, while City forward Jevani Brown hit the side netting from close range after being put through by Nigel Atangana 10 minutes before half time.

Wanderers lost skipper Matt Bloomfield to a concussion in first-half stoppage time after a free-kick hit him in the back of his head, and despite being allowed an extra change following new rules on concussions substitutions this season, Wanderers were still reduced to 10 men after McCarthy hobbled off.

Exeter began to assert themselves with the extra man, but it was Wycombe's Sam Vokes who had the best chance of the night with 12 minutes to go as the Wales striker headed Kaikai's cross wide having peeled off his marker.

Shortly after Horgan limped off and City fans thought Jonathan Grounds had got a late winner but Stockdale saved well from his low strike from the edge of the box before Kaikai was lucky not to give away a penalty after a sliding challenge on Ben Seymour just before the final whistle.

The former Plymouth goalkeeper saved penalties from Jack Sparkes and Grounds - who would have won it had he scored - before stopping Dodd's crucial effort.
