Ryan Hardie's brace helped League One side Plymouth Argyle stun Peterborough with a 4-0 EFL Cup away win.

The Pilgrims' incisive attack dominated against their Championship hosts and they took the lead when Hardie's low drive found the bottom corner.

Peterborough heads sunk when Hardie was allowed space to double Ryan Lowe's side's advantage, with gloss being added to the victory after the break.

The home side grew in confidence but struggled to get back into the game.

Posh suffered an early blow when striker Ricky-Jade Jones picked up a leg injury and had to be replaced.

Minutes later, Hardie was superb in creating a shooting opportunity inside the box from Danny Mayor's pass, as he fired the Pilgrims in front.

Posh had goalkeeper David Cornell to thank for keeping them in the match as he repelled Mayor's powerful drive, before getting back up to block Hardie's goalbound effort.

But the striker was only kept at bay for so long as he capitalised on a great header back from Luke Jephcott to make it 2-0.

The scoreline was reflected across the match statistics as come the hour mark, Peterborough had only mustered one shot on target, compared to eight for their opposition.

Jephcott then headed home a Jordan Houghton corner, before a second assist of the night saw him pick out Panutche Camara, who had an easy tap home.
