Murray Wallace's quickfire double helped Millwall knock Cambridge United out of the Carabao Cup in a hard-fought contest at the Den.

The League One side led for just six minutes through George Williams' header before Wallace levelled for the Lions with a tidy finish.

Three minutes later, Wallace fired home from close range to put his side ahead with his seventh Millwall goal.

Matt Smith found the bottom corner after the break to seal the victory.

Millwall keeper George Long made several important, impressive saves late on to deny the U's, helping strengthen his bid to become the club's number one in place of Bartosz Bialkowski.

In-form striker Benik Afobe was also rested for the hosts, who made eight changes from Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City.

Cambridge made four changes from Saturday's league win over Burton Albion and left top scorer Joe Ironside on the bench.

Wallace made the difference and the outcome will come as a relief to Lions manager Gary Rowett, whose side sit 21st in the Championship and are yet to win in the league this season.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett: "You want to try and navigate through these games without too many injuries and putting too many regular starters out there, where they could go into the weekend with too much fatigue.

"I thought we just about did those things. Some players who haven't started many games, I asked them for that little bit of brightness and mentality and to match Cambridge's work-rate to win the tie. I thought Cambridge were excellent, by the way."

Cambridge head coach Mark Bonner: "Their physicality just told. Matt Smith does that to centre-halves in the Championship, he's a beast. He was hard to defend against.

"We were really competitive against a good Championship side. You have to be careful celebrating defeat too much, but there's so much to like about that side and I'm really positive."
