Stockport County have signed Irish centre-back Neill Byrne for an undisclosed fee from Tranmere Rovers.

The 29-year-old joins on a deal until the of the season and will provide immediate cover for Fraser Horsfall, who set to miss six weeks with injury.

It will be the third time Byrne has linked up with Stockport boss Dave Challinor after spells together at AFC Fylde and League Two Hartlepool United.

Meanwhile, Calum MacDonald has agreed a new deal until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old defender joined the Hatters on a three-month deal in October and has made 12 appearances.

MacDonald left Tranmere in the summer after making 88 appearances in two seasons at Prenton Park.

The Derby youth product will reinforce Stockport's push towards the League Two play-offs after a run of eight wins in their past 12 games.

Byrne, who moved to Tranmere in the summer from Hartlepool, has scored twice in 19 appearances this season but will be cup-tied for Sunday's FA Cup third round tie against Walsall.
