Newport County 1-2 Mansfield Town: Stags keep up play-off chase with win
- Published
Mansfield Town maintained their hopes of securing a League Two play-off place with an away win at Newport County.
The Stags took the lead midway through the first half when Hiram Boateng poked the ball past Joe Day after a smart flick on by Jordan Bowery.
From a Newport corner Mansfield broke and substitute James Gale finished off the move to double the Stags' lead.
The hosts pulled one back as Aaron Wildig headed home Aaron Lewis' cross but it was too little too late.
Mansfield drop out of the play-off places on goal difference, as Salford City's 2-0 win over Hartlepool sees them move into seventh place.
However the Stags still hold a game in hand over Salford, with both sides currently on 69 points.
Newport manager Graham Coughlan told ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport Wales: "We gave two sloppy goals away but other than that I thought we were really good tonight.
"I thought it was a really good game, a really good advert for League Two football between two really good teams.
"The league table will show a distance between them and us, but our performance levels tonight shows we are not far off."
