Newport came from behind to beat Colchester 2-1 thanks to Omar Bogle's fortuitous 64th minute winner.
Bogle was in the right place at the right time as a Colchester clearance rebounded off him and into the net.
Colchester went ahead on 34 minutes as Jayden Fevrier's cross was slotted home by Samson Tovide, but County levelled as Evans deflected Scot Bennett's shot.
Tovide might have equalised with a late header before Arthur Read saw red for kicking out at Newport's Kiban Rai.
The victory sees Newport move up to 14th in League Two after a winless September, while Colchester, who have won only twice in their last 12 away games, fall to 21st, three points above the drop zone.
Newport were playing their first home game since former Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins was given backing by the fans to take over the club.
Newport assistant manager Joe Dunne:
"We thought we should have got something from Salford so we are delighted with the three points.
"After the disappointment from Saturday, it was a deserved win and both teams played their part in a really good League Two game."
